Ingredients

1 large head of green cabbage

1 cup cooked rice (white or brown)

1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 can (6 oz) tomato paste

1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Olive oil for sautéing

Instructions

Prepare the cabbage: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core of the cabbage; then, place the entire head in the boiling water for about 2-3 minutes, or until the outer leaves are tender. Remove the leaves gently and set aside to cool. Repeat until you've removed about 8-10 large leaves.

Make the filling: In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until translucent. In a bowl, combine the cooked rice, ground meat, sautéed onion and garlic, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper. Mix well until fully incorporated.

Stuff the rolls: Place a large cabbage leaf on a flat surface. Spoon about ¼ cup of the filling onto the center of the leaf. Fold in the sides and roll tightly from the stem end to the top. Repeat for all cabbage leaves.

Prepare to bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of crushed tomatoes (about ½ cup) on the bottom to prevent sticking.

Arrange the rolls: Place the stuffed cabbage rolls seam-side down in the baking dish, fitting them snugly together. Pour the remaining crushed tomatoes over the top and sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Serve warm and enjoy your delicious Italian stuffed cabbage rolls!
