Ingredients

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)

1 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)

2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 teaspoons salt

3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon garlic powder (optional)

1 tablespoon dried Italian herbs (optional)

Butter, melted (for brushing)

Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)

Fresh parsley or basil, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, the activated yeast mixture, olive oil, and salt. If desired, add garlic powder and Italian herbs for extra flavor. Stir until combined.

Knead the Dough: Gradually add more flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Let it Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Shape the Breadsticks: After rising, punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 12 inches long) and then shape them into hearts by looping a portion of the rope upward and twisting to form the top of the heart, then bringing the ends down to complete the shape.

Second Rise: Place the heart-shaped breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat Oven: While the dough is rising again, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Brush and Bake: Once the breadsticks have rested, brush them with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Serve: Remove from the oven, and if desired, brush with more melted butter. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley or basil. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
